Hong Kong sees continuing cargo growth in August, up 2.4%

2018/09/29
Cargo and airmail throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reached 431,000 tonnes, increasing 2.4 per cent in August compared to the same month last year. The airport saw strong 9.0 per cent year-on-year growth in transhipments, which contributed the most to the increase in cargo throughput. Amongst key trading regions, traffic to and from North America and Southeast Asia posted the most significant growth. Over the first eight months of 2018, HKIA handled 3.3 million tonnes of cargo and airmail, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.1 per cent. On a 12-month rolling basis, cargo and airmail throughput recorded 5.1 million tonnes. Passenger volume and flight movements reached new monthly highs in August. During the month, passenger volume climbed 5.2 per cent year-on-year to 6.8 million, while flight movements increased 3.8 per cent to 36,950. Meanwhile, Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), said the land reclamation work for Hong Kong International Airport’s Three-runway System (3RS), was proceeding on schedule. “We have been making good progress since construction works for the 3RS began in August 2016. We are confident that all 650 hectares of land – an area equivalent to 34 Victoria Parks – can be completed in another two years’ time,” So said.
